Must be something in the name, but there is nothing Hilary likes better than a mountain Marathon, and after completing Innsbruck earlier this year she did it all again last week in Switzerland
The Jungfrau marathon is one of the most spectacular in Europe. Starting in Interlaken around 4000 runners climb almost 2000 metres. That about 650 flights of stairs , so not surprising that more than 10% of entrants don't make it to the finish line!
Hilary told us "The first half takes you along rivers and through alpine villages - and then the climb starts, with a spectacular backdrop of the Eiger, the Monch, and the Jungfrau mountains for the final few kilometres . As you approach the finish line the distance markers drop to 0.25km but every top or turn you see ahead hides more uphill sections still to come.
In the last few years, the finish has moved to the Eigergletscher which means no final rush downhill - just the top of the mountain. The views, the piper and alpine horns and bells make it very special. Almost enough to dull the pain!"
